There is an old Christian catch phrase that says, "God said it. I believe it. That settles it." That seems to be the sentiment of a great many Christians today. As long as two things exist: 1. It is God Who has said something and 2. I am in agreement with what He has said, then the matter can go forward. But this flies in the face of His Word. Sometimes when we talk "Christianese", what comes from our lips does not reflect what comes from the Bible. The unquestionable Sovereignty of God has come under fire in recent days. "Our God is in heaven. He does whatever pleases Him" (Psalm 115:3). Before creation took place, God was on His throne and happy. Then man was created...and nothing changed. God needs nothing from man. Man needs God.
So when we talk of his will we must keep in mind that His will is never thwarted. His laws are never broken. We are broken upon His laws. I recently heard the phrase "Lord willing and the creek don't rise." What is meant here? Originally it was a phrase that referred to the settlers of the New World early in American history facing the opposition of a particular sect of native Americans. More recently it has come to refer to bodies of water that begin to overflow their banks. The original meaning can certainly be unloving to some, but with either meaning, it seems the speaker is saying something like, "Whenever God wills something, if I am able to do it, and the opposition is not rising against me, thus making it dangerous for me to attempt, then I will get on board with the plan of God" How foolish of the speaker if this is the case.
Quite often God's will seems contrary to our own and even may appear to be dangerous or impossible to accomplish. Not so...never so. If God wills it, it will be done. Our response should be that of Isaiah in chapter 26 - "Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your truth we wait for You. For Your name and renown are the desire of our souls" (Is. 26:8). So we say "yes"...yes to ...sickness... poverty... death at the hands of those people we love with the gospel but who would oppose us...or drowning in high waters as we rescue the perishing...whatever comes our way we must remain in His will. For I can do all thing through Christ Who strengthens me (Phil 4:13). Does this not include engaging things that may kill us? No matter what, let His will be done...make no mistake...it will be.
