Uncommonly Common

There are four kinds of love found in the Bible: Eros, Storge, Phileo and Agape (see previous posts on this subject). Eros could be described as "common attraction"; Storge as "common goal"; Phileo as "common family" and Agape as "uncommon love". This last and highest expression of love (Agape) is based on the character of the Giver and finds no basis in the receiver. In other words it is only possible through the power of Christ living in and through you to do the extraordinary...the uncommon...the infinitely unique. It is life-giving and life-sustaining and is quite simply the most powerful force in the universe. So as we define "love", I invite you to explore this "greatest of these" power that transcends our wildest imagination. This is the only definition.

Here is the Greek: Eros; Storge; Phileo; Agape

Here is the definition: Doing whatever you can even at great cost to yourself, to encourage the act of making much of Jesus.

Here is why it is important: This definition eliminates the tremendous skewing of the meaning of this word and brings us back to the centrality of Jesus in all things.
