There is much concern about diminishing portfolios and evaporating 401k's. So many work so hard for so much that is quickly becoming so little. Unemployment seems to be an epidemic that is touching every corner of this nation. Bailout plans offer little comfort to those who need bailing out the most. It's a great reminder to every believer to hold loosely to the shiny but rusting things of this world. Recently I heard David Jeremiah speak on this subject. He shared the story of a turn-of-the-century pastor that spoke about the fleeting nature of worldly wealth. Afterwards, a rather affluent, cynical man came to the aged preacher and asked, "Are you trying to tell me that all I own really isn't even mine?" The pastor replied, "Ask me in a hundred years."
Let's lay up for ourselves treasures that reflect a heart that understands the true value of eternity. Invest in things that are everlasting. The Dow may fluctuate, and 401k's can become 201k's. But the Lord is the same yesterday, today and forever...and He gives good measure...pressed down...shaken together...and running over
