I Love You?

Love...we often use this word to express our affections for anything or anyone spanning from a pepperoni pizza with extra cheese to our spouse. Certainly we don't mean we feel the same about an italian pie as we do about the one with whom we've chosen to walk through this life. When we were kids we openly criticized the expression of love for an inanimate object with the phrase "If you love it so much, why don't you marry it?" Maybe we were on to something...maybe we need another word to demonstrate how we feel about favorite foods...sports teams...neighborhoods...houses...vacation spots...certain cities, and another for how we might love God and others. The Greek language has them. It expresses love in three ways... Eros...Phileo ...and Agapeo...and they are not all equal. None apply to pizza...maybe we'd be better off just saying we "really like pizza" or something like that, and leave the word "love" out of the equation. But what's the difference between the articulations of the word "love" when it comes to expressing affection for God and others? Maybe misunderstandings about what the word "love" means affect our ability to do so in a negative way...an action that Paul said if we don't display, we are "nothing". Maybe this four-letter word that describes a superior attribute to even faith and hope is worth exploring, I think I'm going to do just that. Stay tuned...
